Sammy Hagar Gives Props to David Lee Roth’s Comeback: “The Fans Deserve It”

May 15, 2025 | Interesting News

In a rare moment of unity between two of rock’s most iconic — and infamously feuding — frontmen, Sammy Hagar has voiced public support for David Lee Roth’s return to the stage, proving once again that time (and maybe a few killer guitar solos) can heal even the deepest riffs.

Hagar took to Instagram to comment on a fan-posted video that juxtaposed performances by both singers on the same night — Roth making his grand return at the M3 Rock Festival with a full set of Van Halen classics, and Hagar continuing his “Best of All Worlds” residency in Las Vegas. The clip highlighted a historic evening for fans of Van Halen, showcasing both legendary voices in action once more.

“If I may add my two cents here: Comparing us today or in the old days really is not what it’s all about,” Hagar wrote. “It’s all about Van Halen — one of the greatest bands, some of the greatest songs in rock history. We were both involved and both had pluses and minuses. I am happy that Dave is out there doing it… The fans deserve it, good or bad.”

The Red Rocker’s comments are a far cry from his previously harsh words about Roth — he once said he wanted to “break the guy’s f***in’ neck” during their infamous 2002 co-headlining tour. But today, Hagar seems more reflective than resentful.

“I believe we’re both doing our best and I’m actually happy. Dave is supporting his era and I will support mine… Everyone should enjoy what we’re both trying to do. Keeping the music his legacy is important.”

Hagar’s Vegas residency wraps up this weekend, and Roth is gearing up for a U.S. tour running July through September. Meanwhile, Hagar just released his heartfelt new track “Encore, Thank You, Goodnight,” inspired by a guitar lick Eddie Van Halen played him in a dream.

It’s not a reunion tour, but it’s a rare moment of mutual respect — and for fans of Van Halen, it’s about as close to harmony as we’ve seen in decades.
