Biff Byford Sets the Record Straight: Battling Bowel Cancer, Not Prostate Cancer

Aug 19, 2025 | Interesting News

In the world of rock and roll, few voices are as iconic as Biff Byford’s. The SAXON frontman recently opened up about his ongoing health battle, correcting some widespread misunderstandings. Although Byford had previously suggested in a video that he underwent surgery for prostate cancer, he has now clarified that he is, in fact, battling bowel cancer. This revelation came via a heartfelt social media post in which Byford expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans worldwide.

Byford underwent surgery on July 8 to remove the cancer and is now set to undergo a short period of chemotherapy, leading to some show cancellations and postponements. However, not all is lost for SAXON fans. Biff assured followers that the special UK & Ireland ‘Hell, Fire & Steel’ tour dates this November will proceed as planned. This tour will be a nostalgic trip for fans as the band will play their classic album ‘Wheels Of Steel’ in its entirety for the last time in the UK.

Despite the health hurdles, Byford’s prognosis remains optimistic. He shared that his operation was ‘successful’ and that doctors have removed all visible cancer, but chemotherapy is a precautionary step to ensure there are no lingering cancer cells. The rock veteran’s resilience is not new to fans; back in 2019, Byford survived a heart attack and underwent emergency triple bypass surgery. In August 2024, he also underwent a procedure to address atrial flutter, another health scare that he overcame.

SAXON’s latest album, ‘Hell, Fire And Damnation’, is the first to feature new guitarist Brian Tatler, who joined the band after Paul Quinn stepped back from touring. The album was produced by none other than Andy Sneap, who has worked with heavyweights like JUDAS PRIEST, EXODUS, and ACCEPT. With the new lineup, SAXON continues to rock stages across the globe, defying the odds stacked against them.

Byford’s candidness about his health challenges and his dedication to SAXON’s legacy is a testament to his unwavering spirit. As fans rally around him, the rock community is reminded of the enduring power of music and the indomitable will of one of its stalwarts. For those eager to catch SAXON live, tickets remain available at www.saxon747.com. As Byford himself says, ‘Thanks again for all your amazing support.’
