Billy Joel Halts Touring After Rare Brain Disorder Diagnosis
Beloved music legend Billy Joel has officially canceled his remaining 2025 tour dates following a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare and often misdiagnosed neurological disorder.
The announcement comes after Joel postponed several shows earlier this year citing an undisclosed medical issue. His last performance took place on February 22 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Now, with his condition revealed, Joel has pulled out of all dates previously scheduled between late April and early July.
“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience,” Joel said in a statement. “Thank you for understanding.”
What Is Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus?
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, NPH occurs when excess cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain’s ventricles, placing pressure on surrounding tissues. Despite the increased pressure, fluid levels often appear normal in scans, leading to frequent misdiagnoses as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. Only an estimated 0.2 percent of people in their 70s are correctly diagnosed with NPH.
Joel’s symptoms reportedly worsened with recent performances, leading to issues with hearing, vision, and balance, prompting his medical team to recommend an extended pause from performing.
Treatment typically involves implanting a shunt to drain the excess fluid, which is then followed by focused physical therapy. Joel, now 76, is “thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health,” according to the statement.
Refunds Automatically Processed
Fans who purchased tickets for any of Joel’s canceled tour stops will automatically receive full refunds, and no further action is necessary. The news was shared across Joel’s social media platforms, including a heartfelt message on his Instagram, thanking fans for their continued support.
A Pause, Not a Goodbye?
While Joel has not indicated if or when he might return to the stage, the tone of the announcement remains hopeful, emphasizing recovery and long-term care. For now, fans will have to rely on Joel’s extensive discography and recorded live performances to keep the music alive.
