Pink Floyd fans, get ready to witness rock history in a whole new way. The band’s legendary 1972 concert film, Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII, has been meticulously restored in 4K and will hit IMAX and cinemas on April 24. The remastered audio, newly mixed by acclaimed producer Steven Wilson, will also be available on a first-ever live album set for release on May 2.
Originally directed by Adrian Maben, Pink Floyd at Pompeii captured the band performing in the hauntingly empty ruins of an ancient Roman amphitheater—an eerie yet stunning setting that perfectly complemented their psychedelic soundscapes. The setlist featured classics like “Echoes,” “A Saucerful of Secrets,” and “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun.”
Nick Mason, Pink Floyd’s legendary drummer, reflected on the film’s significance:
“Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii is a rare and unique document of the band performing live in the period prior to The Dark Side of the Moon.”*
A Long-Lost Treasure, Finally Restored
The restoration process was no small feat. The original film negative, lost for decades, was finally rediscovered in mislabeled film canisters from the Pink Floyd archives.
Lana Topham, the band’s director of restoration, explained:
“Since 1994, I have searched for the elusive film rushes of Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii*, so the recent discovery of the 1972 original 35mm cut negative was a very special moment.”*
The result? A fully restored 90-minute version that merges the original 60-minute concert cut with rare Abbey Road Studios documentary footage filmed shortly afterward.
Steven Wilson’s Sonic Touch
Known for his masterful remixes of classic prog albums, Steven Wilson expressed his deep admiration for the project:
“Ever since my dad brainwashed me as a kid by playing The Dark Side of the Moon on repeat, Pink Floyd has been my favorite band. They are my ‘Beatles,’ deeply ingrained in my musical DNA.”
Wilson’s fresh Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround sound mixes promise an immersive experience that will transport audiences straight into the heart of Floyd’s spacey, atmospheric performance.
