Two Titans of Post-Punk and New Wave — Clem Burke and Dave Allen — Pass Away, Leaving Behind Monumental Legacies

The global music community is grieving the loss of two monumental figures in rock history. Clem Burke, the powerhouse drummer of Blondie, and Dave Allen, the revolutionary bassist of Gang of Four and Shriekback, have both passed away, marking a somber week for fans of punk, post-punk, and beyond.

Clem Burke: The Beat Behind Blondie
Clem Burke, the relentless rhythmic force behind Blondie since their debut in 1976, died at the age of 70 after a private battle with cancer. “He was not just a drummer; he was the heartbeat of Blondie,” the band shared in a heartfelt statement. “His talent, energy and passion for music were unmatched.”

Burke played on every Blondie album—from their raw 1976 debut through breakthrough classics like Parallel Lines (1978), chart-toppers The Tide Is High and Rapture, and their 2017 comeback Pollinator. Following Blondie’s 1980 breakup, Burke became an in-demand drummer, playing with The Romantics, The Ramones (as Elvis Ramone), and artists ranging from Bob Dylan to Eurythmics, Joan Jett, and Iggy Pop. In 2006, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Blondie.

“His legacy will live on through the tremendous amount of music he created and the countless lives he touched,” Blondie concluded.

Dave Allen: The Ace of Bass
Dave Allen, who helped reshape punk into the genre-defying force that became Gang of Four, has died at 69. His former bandmate Hugo Burnham confirmed Allen had been battling early-onset mixed dementia and died surrounded by family.

Allen was instrumental in shaping the angular, politically charged sound of 1979’s Entertainment! and 1981’s Solid Gold, two of post-punk’s defining statements. After leaving Gang of Four, he formed Shriekback, known for their moody, experimental edge, and launched the World Domination Recordings label in 1986.

Later in life, Allen brought his innovative spirit to the tech world, working at Intel, Beats Music, and Apple. “We’ve been so very lucky to have had the Ace of Bass in our lives,” Burnham wrote. “Goodbye, old friend.”

From the electric pulse of New York punk clubs to the jagged edges of UK post-punk, Clem Burke and Dave Allen helped define what it meant to make music that mattered—urgent, fearless, and timeless. Their influence spans generations, and their legacies are etched into every snare hit, every bassline, and every fan who still moves to their music.

Rest in power, Clem and Dave. You made the world louder, cooler, and more alive.
