Rock Legend Bobby Whitlock of Derek and the Dominos Passes Away at 77

In a profound loss to the rock world, Bobby Whitlock, co-founder of the legendary band Derek and the Dominos, passed away at the age of 77. His manager, Carol Kaye, confirmed that Whitlock died peacefully at his home in Texas, surrounded by loved ones, after a brief illness.

Whitlock’s storied career began in the mid-1960s with Stax Records, where he collaborated with iconic soul acts like Booker T. & the M.G.’s and Sam & Dave. But it was his partnership with Eric Clapton in Delaney & Bonnie and Friends that would pave the way for his pivotal role in rock history.

In 1970, Whitlock co-founded Derek and the Dominos with Clapton, contributing significantly to the seminal album ‘Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.’ Whitlock co-wrote half of the album’s 14 tracks, creating timeless classics that resonated with raw emotion and intricate musicianship. The album’s narrative was deeply personal, intertwined with Clapton’s unrequited love for Pattie Boyd, then-wife of George Harrison.

Whitlock’s talents also graced Harrison’s ‘All Things Must Pass,’ where he played alongside Clapton and fellow Dominos bandmates Carl Radle and Jim Gordon. The interconnectedness of these albums, through personnel and personal stories, cemented Whitlock’s place in the annals of rock history.

After Derek and the Dominos disbanded in 1971, Whitlock embarked on a solo career, releasing several albums before retreating from the limelight due to his disdain for the disco era. However, he made a triumphant return in 1999, releasing nine more albums, often in collaboration with his wife, CoCo Carmel.

With Whitlock’s passing, Clapton remains the last surviving member of Derek and the Dominos. His bandmates, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon, passed away in 1980 and 2023, respectively. The legendary guitarist Duane Allman, who contributed to ‘Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs,’ tragically died in 1971.

Whitlock leaves behind a legacy of musical brilliance, having played a key role in some of the most poignant rock music of the 20th century. His contributions will continue to inspire musicians and fans alike.
