In the ever-turbulent world of rock ‘n’ roll, Zak Starkey, the son of Beatles’ legend Ringo Starr, finds himself at the center of a storm involving some of the most iconic bands in music history. Known for his rhythmic prowess, Starkey has been on a wild ride with The Who and nearly joined the Oasis reunion—until fate intervened.
Starkey’s saga began with his commitment to The Who, where he found himself in hot water after vocalist Roger Daltrey expressed dissatisfaction with his performance of ‘The Song Is Over’ at a London show. Despite a brief reinstatement, Starkey faced a second firing, replaced by Scott Devours. Yet, in true rock fashion, Daltrey hinted at the possibility of Starkey’s return.
In an exclusive interview with the Telegraph, Starkey shed light on the chaotic nature of The Who. He revealed that Daltrey’s decision was based on a misunderstanding, asserting, ‘What happened was I got it right and Roger got it wrong.’ According to Starkey, the rare track was meant as a treat for fans, but the band’s aversion to rehearsing led to Daltrey mistakenly coming in ‘a bar early.’
Starkey’s history with Oasis adds another layer to the drama. As a touring member from 2004 to 2008, he was poised to join their reunion. When asked if he would have participated had he not been tied to The Who, his enthusiastic ‘Of course. Of course.’ spoke volumes.
Despite the setbacks, Starkey holds no grudges. He attributes the chaos to The Who’s ‘unpredictable, aggressive and fucking insane’ nature. He even cheekily remarked that he’d return to the band ‘if asked,’ reaffirming his loyalty.
In a twist, Starkey recently reported a conversation with Daltrey, who advised him not to remove his drums from their warehouse ‘in case we need you.’ Starkey’s response? ‘Best let me know.’
As fans eagerly await the next chapter in this rock drama, one thing is clear: Zak Starkey’s story is far from over. Whether it’s The Who, Oasis, or another musical venture, this drummer’s beat goes on.
